New Jersey Devils wins 3-2 against the New York Islanders as the race for the playoffs heats up
The second game of Sunday was played at the Nassau Coliseum as the home team New York Islanders hosted the New Jersey Devils.
The race to the play-off cut is still open for both teams who need points to move up and close to the eighth and final play-off position.
The game started off with the first period ending goalless.
However, the last two periods saw both the teams scoring a goal apiece and at the end of the regulation time the scores were level on 2-2.
Resultantly, the game went into overtime but no goals were scored. However, after shootout it was the Devils who emerged as 3-2 winners of the game.
Ilya Kovalchuk was named the star of the game as he scored a goal and came up with an important assist.
The game started on the slower side for both teams as they were reluctant to go on the attacks.
The main reason of this was the fact that they didn’t want to allow early goals. The period saw the Devils getting better with the passage of time and coming across several scoring chances.
The Islanders also got in with a couple of shots but they too were unable to find the back of the net.
The period ended with the scores deadlocked on 0-0 at the end of the period with the Devils making 8 shots on goal while the Islanders ended with just four shots on target.
The second period Devils approach the game with an attacking mentality. There were several chances of the Devils early on but it wasn’t until the power play that they scored.
The goal was scored by Brian Rolston from a powerful strike that went flying into the back of the net.
The Islanders also came up with a few shots on goal. The Islanders got better and better with the passage of time and finally managed to score in the 18th minute to level the scores.
The goal was scored by Josh Bailey from a well placed flick shot.
The period ended with the scores level on 1-1. During the period, the Devils made 10 goal attempts while the Islanders made 7 shots on goal.
The final 20 minutes of play started off with the Devils scoring through their star player Ilya Kovalchuk in the third minute to get into the lead once again.
The Islanders similar to the second period bagged a couple of shots on goal before they went on the full out attacks.
Though it took some time, Islanders finally scored in the 17th minute to level the scores. The goal was scored by Blake Cameau from a well placed flick shot.
The period ended with the scores level on 2-2 with Devils making 9 goal attempts and the Islanders making 7 goal attempts in the period.
The game went into overtime where no goals were scored, but after the shootout, it was the Devils who emerged as 3-2 winners of the game.
