New Jersey Nets all set to become Brooklyn Nets at the start of next season - NBA Update
It has been 8 years since ex- New Jersey Nets owner Bruce Ratner contemplated on plans to move from Newark to Brooklyn and re-structure the whole franchise by changing its name to the Brooklyn Nets.
Finally, those plans seem to turn into reality as the move is all set to take place at the start of the next season.
The Nets who are currently based in Newark and call the Prudential Center their home will be moving to the Barclays Center, which is currently under the final stages of its construction in Brooklyn.
When Mikhail Prokhorov bought the Nets back in 2010, he promised a better arena and a championship to the fans within the time span of 5 years.
But having missed out on the playoffs this season and the previous four, the chances of the Nets winning a championship still remain close to zero. However, recent slumps have done little to do Prokhorov`s spirits who still remains
adamant to the fact that he will be making the Nets a championship calibre team.
He also believes that if it had not been for a busy schedule as the season had to be cut-short due to a lock-out, the Nets would have been playing in the post season and are only missing out due to being plagued with injuries to
several key players.
Prokhorov said. “And of course, if it hadn’t been for the crazy injuries this year, I’m sure we would have been in the playoffs. That’s for sure.”
With the move to Brooklyn, the Nets will be restructuring their whole franchise. However, the question still remains on how many players will be looking to move with the organization. The most prominent question being the future
of their All-Star point guard, Deron Williams who looks all set to become a free agent in the summer. Nevertheless, Prokhorov believes that he can turn it all around and is looking to find the correct pieces to fit in with the team.
“We need to be really, very patient, because it is easy to have a good team, a playoff team,” he said. “And it’s very difficult to make a championship team. So we need to be very patient. We need to go slow, step by step, to find
the best pieces for the team.”
Mikhail believes that every team requires a star and the Nets will be looking to land the signature of Dwight Howard, who has said that he will be leaving the Orlando Magic after next season.
However Prokhorov did only mention star players, he also mention young stars like MarShon Brooks and Gerald Green, and contemplated on the addition of Gerald Wallace as being the key things to consider as the restructuring of franchise
takes place. It is a step ahead for the future, however it is still not clear on how fast can the Nets get to winning ways in their new home.
