New Jersey Nets assign Terrence Williams to NBA D-League
After being suspended for repeatedly violating team rules, Terrence Williams was assigned by the New Jersey Nets to the Springfield Armor of the NBA Development League on Friday 26 November.
Nets general manager Billy King said in the team’s official statement that he and head coach Avery Johnson decided to send Williams down to the D-League because they still want to evaluate
the 23-year-old forward, who was reportedly suspended because of repeated tardiness in practices and shoot-arounds before their games.
“After discussing the situation with Avery over the last several days, I feel the best course of action for Terrence and the team at this time is for him to play in the D-League,” King said
in the Nets’ official statement. “He is currently on the inactive list and this move will allow him to play until he is once again placed on the active list. There is no timetable on his return to the active list, and Terrence’s future status will be addressed
at the appropriate time.”
Johnson, on the other hand, said that moving Williams to the D-League should not be considered as a demotion because their real purpose is to evaluate the former Louisville standout. He reiterated
that they could not evaluate Williams if he stays with the team because he is not expected to be inactive in their game against the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday 27 November.
“It’s evaluation. That is what the D-League is all about, it’s a developmental league,” said Johnson after their practice on Friday 26 November. “He probably was going to be inactive for
us Saturday in Philadelphia, so a great opportunity for him – for him to get some minutes and for us to continue to evaluate him.”
Williams, who was selected by the Nets as the 11th overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, averaged 6.8 points and 3.8 rebounds in eight games for the Nets this season. The 23-year-old guard/forward
also missed four games this season because abdominal strain.
