New Jersey Nets donate to Eric LeGrand
The New Jersey Nets have announced that they have donated $75,000 to a fund to help paralyzed defensive tackle Eric LeGrand.
The nets gave the money to the ‘Eric LeGrand believe fund’ in order to help the athlete recover from his terrible injury.
LeGrand, who plays for the New Jersey based school Rutgers, suffered the injury in a game between the Scarlet Knights and the Army Black Knights on 16 October. LeGrand was covering on a kickoff when he collided with an Army player and sustained a spinal
cord injury, which has left him paralyzed from the neck down.
The Nets collected money from players, people in the front office, coaches and ownership and also received help from point guard Devin Harris’ charity organization ’34 Ways to Assist Foundation’.
Harris spoke about the horrific injury and why the Nets decided to get involved in helping LeGrand.
“We just wanted to find a way to show our support,” said the point guard. “The athletic community is a very tight-knit group and what happened to Eric is something that affects all athletes at every level. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.”
LeGrand is a native of Avenel New Jersey and was said to be one of the leaders on the Rutgers side. The coaches and players from Rutgers have been updating the media on his status since the injury.
The Nets are hoping that their donation will convince others to come forward and help LeGrand work through the injury. Nets general manager Billy King mentioned echoed the statement.
“We hope that our donation will spur others throughout the state and country to also contribute,” said the general manager.
Rutgers currently sits at 4-3 with a 1-1 record against Big East opponents, which is good enough for third in the conference.
