Question:

New Jersey State Driving Age, has it been recently changed?

I was told today that the minimum of the driving age has been changed from 16 to 17 years old. And, 17 to 18 for driving by yourself. I just want to know, is this true? I'm 15, and will be turning 16 next May. I was told this applies to everyone born in 1993 or above.

Just want to clarify if this is 100 percent true. This would frustrate me, because it seems clear to me that this would be only changed because the politicians seem to generalize all teenagers as crappy drivers.

If it is also true that it is changed, can a link be posted? Thanks.

  1. The driving age in NJ has ALWAYS been 17, never has been 16.  You can get your PERMIT at 16 1/2 IF you have an APPROVED behind the wheel training class & have passed the written test.  But, you still CANNOT get your drivers license until 17.  I am in my 40s & had to wait until 17 to get my permit because I didn't have behind the wheel training class.  My sister is in her 50s & didn't get her permit in NJ until she was 17.

Many years ago, the license at 17 was changed to restricted (not sure how long this is for, you have to check with the NJ Motor Vehicle Bureau), which means, no one under a certain age can be your passenger & you can only drive certain hours - you may be able to get a special waiver for the driving hours for going to work.

  2. i'm 16 and i heard the same thing.

i heard that if you are born after 1992 that you can't get your permit until 17 and get your provisional license until 18.

i've never seen it on the dmv website but i have heard it from numerous people from all around jersey.
