I am going to get my kitten on either this saturday or sunday, I dont not plan to get a carrier for it because i will mostly keep it indoor and dont plan to take it outside alot, and i dont just want to use it once. Any way to transport it? I dont want it to jump around in the car. And I am going to buy the kitten supplies tommorrow, what kind of food do I get it? Dry or wet food? and brand? And anything else I should buy? Tips from owners?

P.S. The kitten is 9 weeks old

  1. You can get cardboard carriers usually at any pet store, they are in-expensive and you will be able to use it again when you take your kitten to the vet to get fixed(spayed/neutered)

Any kitten food to start with, except the cheap stuff, it has so many fillers that your kitten will be eating and pooping a lot. A good quality food is worth the extra expense.  You can give your kitten wet food, if you do though do not give it a lot as it can cause stomach upset, but a little bit does not hurt them once in a while. I am not sure where you live but I used  Natural Choice kitten food by Nutro (that is what they were on at the pet store so I did not change it until after i had them neutered), now I use Purina One and for wet food it is special kitty from Wal Mart

Get some little toys for the kitten, some of the fur mice, balls anything it can play with so that it is not bored, as well as a scratching post so that it does not use your furniture on a regular basis.  If your budget allows it you can get a kitty condo/tree, my cats have one and they love it, it has the scratching post, and different platforms for them to lay on.

Don't forget the water and food dishes, kitty litter pan, kitty litter and scoop.

Edit: check to see what food they are feeding the kitten and it is best to keep the kitten on that for a least a few weeks, if you need to change food do it gradually by putting a little bit in at first and then increasing the amount until the kitten is eating just the new food. Usually takes about a week to 10 days to do this.

  2. Firstly I'll answer the food question. I took our 18 month old cat to the vet yesterday for his vaccination and, while there, expressed my concern for his weight (he's getting FAT). The vet told me that, while he isn't fat, he does need to be taken off Snappy Tom (which he began to eat after our neighbour gave us some). Cat's need dry food more than wet food as it is better for them and if you must go for one of the non-vet foods I would recommend Dine or Ultimates. These are mid-range foods, which are acceptable, whereas stuff like Snappy Tom or whatnot is low-end food and bad for your pet. Personally I prefer to feed cats Heinnman's Science Diet or however you spell the H word.

As for transporting your cat, get a cardboard box from home (the box your TV came in perhaps) and make air holes, place a towel or two in there for warmth and padding and if it is a longer than ten minute journey, take a bowl of water. Cats are very curious, particularly at that age, and the kitten is going to want to explore, if you really don't want it to go around the car make sure you at least partially close the lid and have extra air holes....a lot of them.
