New Lawn Help ! :) ?

Hi,

I recently moved into a new house. The backyard lawn is small, but it is completely trashed. It was terrible when we moved in. We took out all the patches of grass and weed and put Round Up over it. Its been two weeks after, and yet it is still growing. So today I ended up getting all those grass and weed out again. It was a lot more little than it was the first time! My question is, there is a HUGE root of a tree that belongs to the neighbour's in our lawn, we are putting 4 inches of top soil ontop then planting the grass seed down. After, we are going to put Peat Moss ontop so the birds do get to the seeds! So..do we have to kill all the old grass and weed then put the top soil on, or will the little grass and weed just eventually die off ?

Any tips and advices are welcomed !

Thanks !

  2. till it

  3. 4 inches of topsoil would smother the grass.  The grass and weeds would end up dying and becoming organic matter for your soil.  I would suggest laying down layers of newspaper or cardboard first then pouring your soil on top.  It will help stomp out the grass and weeds and break down easily into the soil.

You could try using rubbing alcohol on your lawn.  It sucks all the water out of everything it touches so it would dry up your lawn.  I don't know how large your yard is but you could also try boiling water.  It pretty much "cooks" the plants and all it touches.  Those are a couple of cheap ideas to try. (Cheaper and less chemically damaging than Round-Up)

There's nothing you can do about that root.  Well, I guess if you couldn't stand it you could dig it up but unless it is causing foundation problems for your house I wouldn't worry about it since you are covering it up.

That black strip is called edging, but I dunno how to put it down.
