With the injury of Invasor who do you think assumes the throne as horse racings best active horse. These horses could be grass specialists or sprinters or three year old. I just wanna know who and why?

  1. New leader? There is none. I think it will be awhile before we see another horse like Invasor.

  2. discreet cat.....will be tough to deny the rest of the year, but the breeders' cup race day will bring in some top notch horses from over-seas.....good luck and good racing.

  3. Well I think there's some really good older horses...  I like Corinthian and Political Force who are running in the Suburban this weekend.

As for horse of the year this year, I'm gonna say if Street Sense has another win, he'll be the major active horse.  He won Champion 2 year old last year, then won the Derby...  and he barely lost the 2 races he lost this year...  it was by a nose both times.  I think he's very talented.  But between him and Curlin, it probably comes down to who wins later this summer, especially with the Breeders.  Curlin's early big wins kinda made people look at him as better than what he really was.  I mean he's talented, but I knew better than to be convinced of his greatness by looking at his big wins over maidens and grade 2ers.  And I was right because as soon as he was with other talented horses, he came in 3rd.  He's proven himself now with his Preakness win and his Belmont 2nd.  So I think it's a match race between him and Street Sense for horse of the year.

But...  if Rags to Riches runs again with the boys and does well, she could steal the title from both of them.  She's easily the best filly.  I'd love to see her win some more and become Horse of the Year.  But I don't see Rags going on next year to run the Dubai World Cup or anything like that.  But I guess last year I wouldn't have guessed she'd run the Belmont...  so I guess she could end up in Dubai too.

Between the 3, Street Sense is the top money earner...  I think he's the one to watch for the best active horse, but we need to keep an eye on the others.  I'd mention Lava Man, but I honestly don't think he can win outside of CA.

When you read about Invasor being retired... why does it feel like a friend died?  It's just so disappointing.

  4. I got a kick out of Newmarketsalsa's answer! Unfortunately for most of us American's we don't get to see any of the big races from England, Ireland, Australia unless you have TVG... and then viewing is limited. And even more unbelievable is the fact we rarely get to see Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe ! So, we have only our own horses to rate and it's definitely NOT a put down to any other horses in the world. The only time we get a real good look at other horses is at Breeder's Cup time. And then some of the really good turf horses run in the Canadian International because of the fantastic EP Taylor Turf Course, this is usually a week to 10 days before Breeder's Cup.

Now on to the question. I love Corinthian, it looks like Jimmy Jerkins has finally got this horse settled. As long as he stays sound I think there we are going to see HUGE things out of him. This horse has one of the most Royal pedigrees going! Take a look: http://www.pedigreequery.com/corinthian4

I also anxiously await the decision Pletcher and owners make about running Rags to Riches in the Travers. She also has an awesome pedigree: http://www.pedigreequery.com/rags+to+ric...

She is bred to run all day! I think she's already in the running for Horse of the Year, just with her Win in the Belmont.

I thought her half brother Jazil would be a force to be reckoned with this year, but so far he hasn't shown up. Also Street Sense and Curlin have to be mentioned here. I think we will see Curlin get a much deserved rest, and then show up for the big races in the late summer.

Addition: Hey Newmarket, I wasn't offended in any way shape or form! I live for racing, and often stay up to catch the Japan races even when I know I am going to pay in the morning. Thanks for the links to catch a glimpse of your races, I did get to see Royal Ascot thanks to TVG's coverage. I have long admired horses from the UK, The Queen used to send horses to run at Saratoga... and man were they FINE specimens!

I stated I got a kick out of your posting because it was likely Americans wouldn't even recognize a lot of the horses you listed. And you know how we are about racing... US vs. The World...LOL! That's why I love it when Breeder's Cup rolls around. We get to see most of the finest horses from around the world!

So please accept my apology, I didn't mean to give the impression that I was offended by your answer.

  5. I really loved Invasor but I think the next top horses are Corinthian and Lava Man! Corinthian showed his greatness in the Met Mile. Lava Man is still a great horse too! He won the Santa Anita Handicap twice in a row and hoping to win the Hollywood Gold Cup!
