New Orlando Magic General Manager coy on Dwight Howard rumours – NBA Update
While Orlando Magic super star Dwight Howard agreed to a year long extension in his contract with the franchise last season; that does not mean that he won’t be moving away. In fact, interest in Howard is as high as it has been, with various teams reportedly preparing trade offers for the coveted centre.
Magic’s new General Manager, Rob Hennigan, has been given the unenviable task of charting a way forward, and the executive is keeping his cards pretty close to the chest. With draft night fast approaching, rumours that Howard could be dealt away are gathering pace, but Hennigan isn’t about to divulge anything on that.
"I don't want to comment on that," Hennigan said Wednesday, and suggested that the franchise was still analyzing its options. "We're gonna continue to evaluate everything we can and analyze all the details and the options and the scenarios. I don't know the answer to that. I have communicated with Dwight. I have communicated with his representation."
One rumour doing the rounds is that the Houston Rockets are bent on putting together a package with which to lure Howard. The Rockets are reportedly going to offer Orlando some high draft picks and a player or two to sweeten the deal. They are even prepared to take Howard without the guarantee of him signing a long term deal.
Rob though wouldn’t go into details of any specific deal. What he did admit though was that the Magic are taking to teams, and a deal could be in the offing sooner or later.
"Chatter's chatter I think," Hennigan said. "What I can tell you is we're in discussion with a lot of different teams about a lot of different things.”
The Orlando GM said the franchise was not in a hurry and he would be looking to do the best thing for the team as well as for Howard.
"We're just gonna take it one step at a time and try to identify what's important to us and identify what's important to Dwight."
The Magic currently have two picks in the 2012 NBA draft, and might be looking to move them up if they are to let Dwight go.
