New Orleans Hornets free agent David West busy in charity work – NBA Update
David West is famous in New Orleans not only because of his production on the court but also his involvement in activities that can benefit the public at large. He had actively taken part in the programs
designed to improve the condition of the society, especially the children, who had suffered drastically after hurricane Katrina.
David West is a power forward of the New Orleans Hornets. This giant of 6 feet 9 was drafted by the Hornets as 18th overall in 2003. West is well renowned for his exceptional abilities to score and smooth mid range game.
He is quite effective as a rebounder and plays consistently on defense. He has the capability to convert with both hands but tore his left anterior cruciate ligament after a victory at Utah few months back.
"I'm giving these kids unique information which I got it at 25, I'm giving it to benefit them at 12 and 13.”Said David West. “Basketball is not an end for me. It's a means/ instrument that I use to reach
folks. This pays me in a way that money and the NBA can't.”
He is working out now a days and doing some community work at Garner Road Bulldogs AAU program, showing the little players how to do the pick-and-roll. He is teaching them the concepts that he learned from his Xavier University’s
former coaches Thad Matta and Skip Prosser. He teaches children the lessons he learned in his life and emphasizes the need to study so as to become legitimate players.
As the lockout is stretching longer than expected, with many players signing deals overseas, he is staying in New Orleans. He is doing his workouts, recovering from his injury and spending time with the kids at J.D Lewis Center
five days a week. He had not shown his interest in playing anywhere else and expressed his confidence in the National Basketball Association’s players and owners that things will work out sooner or later and that will be fair for both the sides.
"I've never totally bought into the NBA lifestyle. I'm by nature not a heavy spender.  We don't have any bills because I don't believe in debt.”  West opted out of the final year of deal that would have
paid him $7.5 million. He is never seen with the luxuries that other players of his stature enjoy.
He has a completely different Philosophy and that he teaches it to the children as well. “Your course, your path, is not going to be like mine. Everybody is not called to be a multimillionaire or the president.
Whatever your best work is, you do it. Do it well. You cease your own greatness when you aspire to be someone else.”
