New Orleans Saints Brees past the Pittsburgh Steelers
New Orleans Saints quarterback, Drew Brees, was a force to be reckoned with as he led his team past the Pittsburgh Steelers by a score of 20-10 on Sunday 31, October.
How it happened
Brees completed 34 of his 44 pass attempts and, once again, threw for over 300 yards as the Saints' passing offence was responsible for 288 of the team's 318 total offensive yards.
With the score tied 3-3 at the end of the first half, Brees took over in the second completing 20 of 22 second-half passes. All the touchdowns came in the fourth quarter, with the first coming with the
Saints already leading 6-3. Brees found Marques Colston by the sideline with a pass and enough space to dive into the endzone.
On the very next possession the Steelers reduced the deficit after Rashard Mendenhall broke to the outside and ran 38 yards for a touchdown.
With just under three minutes to go the Saints went ahead further when Drew Brees found receiver Lance Moore in the end zone with an eight-yard pass.
From there, the Saints defence took over, intercepting Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on the Steelers' next possession to secure the victory.
What they're saying
The Saints have to feel good about coming up with a big win against one of the AFC's biggest teams.
"We knew what a big game this was," Brees said. "There was no better way to get back on track than to beat these guys. I felt like we played as complete a game as we've played all year, especially in the
second half."
The Steelers knew coming into the game that it was going to be tough. The test coming out will be to see how they respond.
"It was a hostile environment for us. The fans were into it," Steelers coach MikeTomlin said about playing against the noise in the Superdome. "We struggled a little bit on possession downs because of
it, but that's no excuse. We knew this was going to be a tough place to play coming into it. I was hopeful that we would perform better than we did."
"This is definitely a gut check for us," Roethlisberger added. "We got knocked down a little bit tonight and now it will be interesting to see how we bounce back."
What it all means
With the loss the Steelers (5-2) drop to second in the AFC North behind the Baltimore Ravens who hold the slight edge by virtue of winning their head-to-head. The Steelers now head to Cincinnati to take
on the Bengals next Monday, 8 November.
After being upset by the Cleveland Browns, the Saints got back on track and improved their record to 5-3 but still sit in third place in the NFC South behind the Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers
who are both 5-2. They travel to Carolina to take on the Panthers (1-6) next Sunday.
