New Orleans Saints DC Steve Spagnuolo wants another shot at head coaching role in future - NFL News
The head coaching job is not for everyone and many coordinators who make the jump into the hot seat face great troubles trying to get their team to deliver wins while also keeping the owners and players satisfied.
That is something former St. Louis Rams head coach and current New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator, Steve Spagnuolo found out the hard way.
Spagnuolo was given three seasons to turn around the Rams but managed to win only 10 of his 48 games in charge of the franchise.
He was fired last year by the Rams management after another disappointing end to the regular season but quickly found work as a defensive coordinator with the New Orleans Saints who had just released their former coach, Gregg Williams.
Even though Spagnuolo feels that he is lucky to be coaching a National Football League (NFL) franchise so soon after getting the sack, he still yearns to return back to the head coaching role in the future.
Speaking to the The Boston Globe on Sunday, he said.
"Yeah, there's a burn there, I'm not going to lie to you,"
Adding further he said.
"I think the professional thing to do in this situation is you concentrate all your efforts and all your focus on the job that you have right now.”
"I feel lucky I have this job. In this business, you fight every day to keep the job that you have.”
He did however, say that if given another chance he would jump at the opportunity to take over a franchise and believes he will be a better head coach should he be given the chance.
"I think I'm a better football coach. I know if given the opportunity again, which I hope happens, I will be a 10-times-better head coach, because sometimes you learn more from your failures than you do from your success."
For now though, Spagnuolo has taken over duties to prepare a Saints offence facing great adversity in the shape of suspensions to two of its best players for their role in the infamous Saints bounty scandal.
He now needs to motivate his players and make them ready for the upcoming season.
