New Orleans Saints GM Mickey Loomis talks about QB Drew Brees' contract situation - NFL News
The stalemate between New Orleans Saints and quarterback, Drew Brees, over a new long term deal has gone on for months with no signs of ending soon.
Brees on Wednesday in a radio interview spoke about his increasing frustration with the franchise over the slow pace of negotiations. He also went on to say that he does not feel there is a sense of urgency at the franchise to lock him up to a new deal.
However, general manager, Mickey Loomis on Friday emphasised that the Saints are working hard to end the contract saga but went on to say that the new deal will impact the team for a long time and they have to get it right.
Loomis though did not specify the main bottlenecks faced by the franchise to secure Brees to a new deal.
Speaking to the Associated Press he said.
"I feel for him. I feel with him. He wants to be here right now. I want him to be here right now and we'll work hard to get that accomplished,"
He continued.
"It's important to Drew, but it's important to our team. The magnitude of this contract is going to impact our team for a long period of time, so we've got to get it right. It's got to be right for Drew, but it's got to be right for our team as well."
According to earlier reports, money remains the main bone of contention between the Saints and the quarterback, with Brees looking to get a contract on par with those given to New England Patriots quarterback, Tom Brady and Denver Broncos quarterback, Peyton
Manning.
Brees has yet to sign his franchise tender and has stated that he will hold out of the team’s mandatory Organised Team Activities (OTAs) which start on Tuesday.
Loomis went on to say that no one at the organisation wants Brees back more than him.
"No one wants to get him signed more than I do. ... We've just got to get it right."
After the record-breaking performances Brees delivered last season the quarterback has become even more important after the well documented problems the Saints faced in the current offseason.
It is high time that the Saints sit down and finalise a deal with their best player.
