New Orleans Saints Guard Carl Nicks wants to become highest paid in league - NFL News
New Orleans Saints may be preparing to lose a crucial starter in free-agency and they can do nothing about it having used their franchise tag on quarterback Drew Brees.
Saints guard and two time Pro Bowler Carl Nicks has reached the end of his contract and even after receiving what he termed a “respectable” contract from New Orleans is not ready to sign just yet with the franchise.
Nicks is determined to test free agency and see what offers he will receive for his services from other franchises not limited by cap space.
Talking in an interview to the media on Monday, the 26-year-old said that he wants a contract that would make him the highest paid player in the National Football League (NFL).
“I plan to be the highest paid guard in the NFL. You can take that whatever kinda way but that’s my goal.”
Nicks has been an integral part of New Orleans offensive line protecting quarterback Drew Brees and giving him ample time to make his accurate passes during the regular season.
The offensive guard’s brilliance helped Brees break the NFL’s passing yards record while also throwing more touchdown passes than any other quarterback in the league.
Since joining New Orleans in the 2008 draft, Nicks’ form has been brilliant as he helped the Saints lift their one and only Super Bowl title.
However, the Guard seemed disappointed with the lack of effort from the Saints to keep him.
“I just feel like even if they felt like they couldn’t afford me or whatever, at least make an effort and at least try to low-ball me”
He seems determined though to keep his options open and with such a brilliant talent available many franchises will be looking to get their hands on Nicks and give him the contract he feels he deserves.
“Absolutely. I mean I don’t wanna sound cocky or anything but I busted my butt for four years, I made a couple Pro Bowls. I’ve been dedicated to the team and I’ve proven my stats speak for itself. I just feel like I should get paid what I deserve.”
It remains to be seen where he ends up during free agency but with Saints deal now on the table and his love for the city Nicks might just give a discount and remain in the Big Easy.
