New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees contract negotiations progressing slowly - NFL News
New Orleans Saints and quarterback Drew Brees are locked in negotiations over a new long-term contract, however, as of now the negotiations are still progressing slowly.
Brees though, is not worried about anything and believes that a new deal will eventually be signed by both parties.
"There's no doubt in my mind we'll get a deal done," said Brees.
The quarterback is set to become a free agent as his previous contract nears expiration and the Saints have till March 5 to franchise tag their best player or risk losing him in free agency if no contract is signed.
It is highly unlikely though that Brees will leave New Orleans. The quarterback has become a part of the city through his brilliant displays on the field as well as his off the field charity work.
The quarterback led New Orleans to a Super Bowl in 2008-09 and this season too continued his brilliant form for the franchise.
Brees created a new passing yards record this year, beating Miami Dolphins legend Dan Marino’s 30-year old record while also passing for a league high 46 touchdowns.
The quarterback is not worried at all about the slow pace of negotiations and says that it is a process which takes time and he is in no hurry.
"I wouldn't say we're 'very far' apart. I think there's been progress made. But just like everything it's a process. It takes time. It's not something that happens overnight."
The Saints ended the 2011-12 regular season 13-3 with some wonderful performances. Brees led the way throughout decimating the opposition with his accurate throws and brilliant work in the pocket.
New Orleans qualified for the playoffs, beating Detroit Lions in the wildcard round to setup a division round encounter with the San Francisco 49ers.
In a close game the 49ers defeated the Saints 36-32. With just nine seconds remaining 49ers quarterback Alex Smith found tight end Vernon Davis and timed his throw to perfection for a 14-yard touchdown that knocked out the Saints from reaching the National
Football Conference (NFC) Championship game.
However, the Saints could be proud of a wonderful season and will likely be in the thick of things if they can retain the services of Drew Brees for many seasons to come.
