New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees excited about the new season - NFL News
New Orleans Saints and quarterback Drew Brees had been at logger heads for the entirety of the offseason as negotiations on a new long term deal reached a stalemate.
Brees held out of both the Saints organised team activities (OTAs) and mandatory training camp after refusing to sign the franchise tender that was placed on him.
As the July 16th deadline to sign a new deal came closer it seemed increasingly unlikely that both parties would agree on a new long-term deal.
Luckily for the Saints fans both the franchise and Brees reached agreement just before deadline day and signed a new five-year contract worth $ 100 million with $ 60 million in guarantees.
Brees reported for the Saints training camp on Tuesday and took part in his first press conference since signing his new mega contract.
Speaking to reporters in a “Guantanamo Bay” t-shirt, Brees talked about the upcoming season:
He said:
"I'm excited about the unknown because in a lot of ways, we don't necessarily know what to expect."
Adding further he said:
"With all this stuff swirling around us, in the end, all we can worry about is what we can control. ... I know the type of guys we have. I know the coaches we have. I'm excited to watch it all come together."
The 2012 offseason has not been good for the New Orleans Saints.
With head coach Sean Payton suspended for the entire season in addition to defence captain Jonathan Vilma, the franchise faces great adversity this offseason.
However, with Brees back in the team the Saints at least have their best player ready to perform in the new season.
The quarterback will now have more responsibility on his shoulders to lift the team and help guide them into the playoffs this season and maybe even the Super Bowl which New Orleans is set to host this year.
Brees said about the chance to play the Super Bowl at home field:
"I know what we're made of. I know where we've been. I know where we want to go. There's no greater opportunity than what we have right now in front of us."
This is a big season for New Orleans Saints and Brees with fans expecting the quarterback to help carry the team in 2012.
