New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees meets with NFL as part of NFLPA executive committee - NFL News
Quarterback, Drew Brees is not just the New Orleans Saints star player but also an executive committee member of the players union, National Football League Players Association (NFLPA).
He met on Monday with the National Football League (NFL) representatives to talk on a range of issues and also discussed the biggest story of this year’s offseason, the New Orleans Saints bounty scandal.
NFLPA President, Dominique Foxworth talked to the media after the meetings and said that Brees was at the meeting in his capacity as the union’s executive committee member and not as a Saints player.
"It's mostly coincidental that Drew and Scott are here, they're also executive committee members, so they're here to serve their duties as executive committee members, not necessarily as members of the Saints. Obviously Drew is, and Scott was a member of
the Saints, that's true. But their capacity here is as executive committee members."
Scott Fujita currently linebacker for the St. Louis Rams and a former teammate of Brees was also present during the meetings.
A range of issues were discussed with the NFL including player safety and the use of Human Growth Hormone (HGH) drugs by players.
The bounty scandal only came up at the end of the meetings and Brees said that the league did not provide anything new or concrete in regards to player involvement.
"We didn't get any meaningful evidence, or any meaningful truth or facts,"
Brees has been an important member of the NFLPA and played a vital role in negotiating the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with the league which ended the NFL Lockout and allowed the 2011-12 season to go ahead.
The NFL is still mulling over punishments to be handed down to players involved in the bounty scandal. It was alleged previously that as many as 22 to 27 players were involved in the program.
However, as of now no progress has been reported over player involvement in the scheme.
The Saints bounty scandal became public in March but a recent audio tape of the Saints defence meeting released by filmmaker Sean Pamphilon showed how the entire programme was put in effect.
In the tape former defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams is heard extorting his players to target the ACLs and concussions of their opponents.
It is expected that the league might begin handing out punishments near the end of this week.
