New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees not worried at all about contract extension - NFL News Update
New Orleans Saints’ star quarterback, Drew Brees on Friday January 20, 2012, reaffirmed his commitment to the franchise and told reporters that he is highly confident of renewing his contract with the Saints as his previous agreement comes to an end.
The Saints’ QB played a major role in the Big Easy’s push for the playoffs and in the process broke records upon records with his name under consideration for the coveted Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.
The quarterback had during the season, put all negotiations on hold so that he could concentrate on the Saints push towards a Super Bowl spot.
New Orleans however, were surprisingly knocked out at the divisional round by the San Francisco 49ers and with the season over, Brees’s contract situation has now taken centre stage for the Saints.
"My No. 1 priority, and it always has been this, is keeping our team together and making sure we have the right guys in the right positions to make a run at this for a long time", Brees said. "We all kind of work together on this thing. Put it this way:
I'm not worried one bit about my contract or our ability to keep guys at key positions".
Brees’s regular season performances were some of the best that have been seen in the National Football League (NFL).
The quarterback broke Dan Marino’s thirty year old single season passing yards record and stamped his name in the history books as he passed for a record, 5,476 yards.
The 33-year old also had passed for the most touchdowns this year at 46 and his pass completion rate was also second to none, completing a mammoth 71.2% of his passes as he helped the Saints end the season with a 13-3 record.
The Saints playoff campaign started off with a brilliant offensive performance as they knocked out playoff rookies, Detroit Lions, with a 45-28 win in the wild card round to set up a divisional round encounter with the San Francisco 49ers.
Brees performed brilliantly against the 49ers as well, passing for 462 yards as he created four touchdowns but the Saints were outscored for only the fourth time in the season as the 49ers won a nail biting encounter on the final play of the game.
49ers' quarterback, Alex Smith’s 14-yard touchdown pass to tight-end, Vernon Davis, in the final nine seconds of the fourth quarter knocked out New Orleans who lost 36-32.
With the season over Brees is now looking forward to spend more time in New Orleans a city he has fallen in love with.
"This is a place that is very special in our hearts. We've had two of our kids raised here and hopefully we'll have more in the future", Brees said.
The Saints have one of the best players in their roster to ever grace the NFL and it will be in both parties interest to extend the star quarterbacks' contract.
