New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees rejects contract offer - NFL News
It seems that the New Orleans Saints will be resigned to put the franchise tag on their best player and quarterback Drew Brees after news emerged that Brees has rejected the latest offer by the franchise.
According to multiple sources close to the negotiations the Saints offered Brees a huge contract that would have made him the highest paid player in the National Football League (NFL) but the quarterback rejected the offer straight away.
The news will be a shock to fans who had earlier thought that the franchise was dragging its feet on paying the 32-year-old what he deserved but now the frustration will turn to the quarterback after this latest report.
The news comes at the same time that Saints general manager Mickey Loomis rejected earlier reports which cited him as telling reporters that Brees was a “very good” quarterback rather than a “great” one.
Loomis in a statement to the Times-Picayune said that he never considered the quarterback to be anything less than great and called the idea “ridiculous”.
"I have always thought of Drew as a great player. Always.
Adding further he said.
“Even when his shoulder was damaged I thought he was a great player. That's why we wanted him, and it's ridiculous for anyone to think otherwise."
The Saints have till the March 5th deadline to put the franchise tag on the quarterback to stop him from becoming a free agent but New Orleans also have other crucial first teamers in wide receiver Marques Colston and guard Carl Nicks who they
are looking to tag.
However, Brees takes priority and if no contract can be agreed, the Saints will tag the quarterback.
No comments have come in from either Brees or his agent on the new developments and no reason has been given as to why the quarterback rejected his new long term deal which according to sources was at par with what Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning
and New England Patriots Tom Brady were earning.
For now though the Saints have another big problem to deal with as the fallout from the NFL’s investigation into an illegal bounty system grows.
Only Brees and his agent know the reason for rejecting the new contract offering and it might be revealed in the coming days as the March 5 deadline approaches closer.
