New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees signs new mega deal, ends contract saga - NFL News
The biggest contract saga of this offseason is now firmly put to bed as on Sunday New Orleans Saints quarterback, Drew Brees finally put pen-to-paper on his new mega deal.
Brees’ agent Tom Condon and Saints general manager, Mickey Loomis had just a few days ago agreed on a new five-year deal for the quarterback with a total value of $ 100 million, $ 60 million of which are guaranteed.
The quarterback signed the document on Sunday making him the most highly paid player in the National Football League (NFL).
Earning $ 20 million average annually, Brees will now rejoin his teammates at the start of training camp and is looking forward to getting back to practice.
Speaking to the media he said:
"It's been a little surreal just because of the process throughout the offseason, and just how challenging an offseason it's been for everyone, obviously everyone within the Saints organization, this city."
Adding further he said:
"It's just been a crazy offseason and I think we're all just ready to get back to work and excited that it's all starting here in a week. It's hard to believe."
It took both parties just a few days before deadline day on July 16th to reach a new mega-deal. The Saints had earlier placed Brees on the franchise tag which would have paid him around $ 16.3 million for the season.
However, the quarterback refused to sign his franchise tender as he held out for a long term deal and had also suggested about missing training camp if a new contract was not agreed upon.
On Sunday though all such scenarios were put to bed with the new mega deal and Brees is now looking forward to being back amongst his teammates.
"I missed the guys; I missed the competition. I'm just excited to get back to work."
The ending of the saga is great news for Saints fans who have received nothing but bad news throughout the offseason.
With the deal done the franchise has gotten rid of a big distraction heading into training camp and Brees’ return will help the team concentrate on getting ready for a difficult 2012-13 regular season.
