New Orleans Saints aim to get their first win as they host Kansas City Chiefs – NFL Preview
New Orleans Saints had a bad start to the 2012 season due to some unlikely reasons. However, they will have a chance to change their fortune as they face Kansas City Chiefs in Week 3 game on Sunday, September 23, 2012, at Mercedes-Benz Superdome, New Orleans.
It was expected that Saints would struggle particularly in the offensive side of the game in absence of Head Coach Sean Payton, who is suspended for the entire season, due to his involvement in the Bounty Gate scandal.
However, things have gone in a totally opposite direction as Saints defence currently has the worst record in the league this season. They are standing lowest in the league, allowing an average of 461 yards per game.
The defence was completely ripped apart during the two games by the young and athletic quarterbacks of the opponents.
Both teams have struggled big time to get a good defensive output during the first two weeks as each allowed a total of 75 points in their respective two ties.
On the other hand, Chiefs’ defence struggled miserably against Buffalo Bills backup tight end C.J. Spiller as he managed to score two touchdowns.
Offensively, Saints look to have an upper hand against Chiefs lacklustre defence. Quarterback Drew Brees will have to provide a game-winning performance to give his team their first victory. Passing game has looked strong for Saints.
Brees gave his opinion about Saints’ winless run recently. The Associated Press quoted Brees as saying:
"Unfortunately, we've done some things in these past two games that have set us back. The important thing is recognizing what those things are. I feel like we have that. Now it's just a matter of getting the extra break, having things go your way, and getting
on a win streak.”
Facing Chiefs’ offence will be a relatively easier task for Saints defence as quarterback Matt Cassel is not as much athletic and threatening as Robbert Griffin III (RG3) and Cam Newton.
Chiefs will rely more heavily on the running game which has been very effective this season. They got an average of 6.3 yards per carry against Bills which was the highest in Week 2.
Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel believes that his team will return with a good performance on road. Crennel said:
"I don't know if it's a must-win, but we'll look at it as a must-win because we want to win it. We won't fall off the Earth if we lose, but I won't tell them that because I want there to be a sense of urgency."
It is Chiefs’ sixth 0-2 start in last seven seasons, while Saints had such a start five seasons ago in 2007.
