New Orleans Saints and QB Drew Brees finally agree on mega five-year deal - NFL News
It took ages for what at first was thought to be straightforward negotiations. However, after months of negotiations and long periods without any communications both New Orleans Saints and quarterback, Drew Brees finally reached agreement on a new long-term
deal.
What a deal it is too.
Brees and Saints have agreed to a new five-year deal worth a total of $ 100 million and the most mind numbing figure of $ 60 million in guarantees.
This latest deal makes Brees the highest paid player in the entire National Football League (NFL) after the deal was reportedly struck on Friday.
In a message to fans on Twitter, Brees wrote:
“Deal is Done!Love you, Who Dat Nation. See you soon!”
Brees still has to sign the contract after passing a medical which is just a formality to be completed.
New Orleans Saints owner, Tom Benson also released a statement confirming the new deal.
Benson said:
"Congratulations are in order for our organization, our city, Drew and Brittany and certainly for Mickey Loomis and his staff for all of the hard work put in to make this possible."
Adding further he said:
"Now we must turn our focus to getting ready for the start of training camp and to keeping with our goal of being the first team in NFL history to host and play in a Super Bowl."
The quarterback’s contract was one of the biggest news stories of the offseason barring that of the New Orleans Saints bounty scandal.
Brees’ figures over the past few years show that the quarterback has well earned his contract and last season he had one of his best seasons as he created a new single season passing yards record as he passed for 5,476 yards.
Saints general manager, Mickey Loomis, said in his statement after striking the deal with Brees’ agent, Tom Condon.
"What Drew has accomplished in his time with the Saints, he deserves to be the highest paid player in the league."
This is great news for the Saints fans after what has been a season filled with accusations against their team due to the bounty scandal.
Now with Brees under contract the fans can once again look forward to a big season in 2012.
