New Orleans Saints assistant coach Joe Vitt confident QB Drew Brees will return in time for training camp
No progress has been made still by the New Orleans Saints to agree to a new long term deal with quarterback, Drew Brees, as he continues to hold out of the team’s voluntary training sessions.
Brees was placed on a one year franchise tender by the Saints early in the offseason but the quarterback is yet to sign the tender and is waiting for the franchise to come up with a new contract offer.
Fans are feeling growing uncertainty about whether their quarterback will sign his tender and take part in the Saints training camp.
However, Saints assistant coach, Joe Vitt who is currently acting as interim head coach in the absence of head coach, Sean Payton, is confident that Brees will be back in time for training camp.
Speaking to reporters after taking practice on Thursday, he said.
“What else is he going to do?”
“He can’t sing or dance. Listen, again. I don’t think that anyone thought this was going to be easy. We talked about the lockout last year; well they’re going to come back here. They are going to come back there.”
Adding further he said.
“No, I think that everyone knew that it was going to go until the 23rd hour and that everything was going to be settled. Again, there are a lot of pieces here that Mickey’s (Loomis) got to get fit in, with the cap and getting people signed and so on and
so forth and it’s all going to fit into the future and this is going to get done.”
It remains to be seen when the quarterback will return back to training with the Saints.
Both parties will have to work out a deal before the July 16 deadline and if no agreement is reached on a new contract, Brees will have the option of either signing his tender or sitting out games in the regular season.
Hopefully, Vitt’s confidence is not unfounded and the quarterback returns to help the Saints in the upcoming 2012-13 season.
This is a year when the Saints are facing a lot of adversity after receiving severe punishments regarding the bounty scandal and Brees’ absence will make the situation even worse.
