New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo talks defence - NFL News
New Orleans Saints got back to winning ways on Monday with a much needed 28-13 victory over the struggling Philadelphia Eagles.
The Saints have had one of the most worrying starts to a National Football League (NFL) campaign this year as they lost their first four games.
They suffered their fifth defeat of the season in week eight against the Denver Broncos and desperately needed the win over Philadelphia on Monday.
New Orleans achieved just that and now boasts a 3-5 record.
Defence has been their main weakness this year and the franchise currently has the worst defensive record in the entire league.
Steve Spagnuolo who took over defensive coordinator duties this year has faced the brunt of criticism for the defence’s poor performance and just looked relieved that the franchise had won against the Eagles.
In his press conference on Tuesday, the defensive coordinator could not help but open by praising God for the win over the Eagles.
Speaking to the media he said:
“Praise God, is all I can say. It’s good to get a win. The most gratifying thing really from our standpoint on defence was at the end of the game to look up at the scoreboard and see that there was 13 points and we had won a football game. We were happy
about that.”
He admitted that the defensive stats from the game were not impressive and said that he is working hard to eliminate mistakes.
The Saints next face division rivals Atlanta Falcons at home in week 10 which will be their toughest test yet.
Atlanta are the only unbeaten team remaining in the league and the Saints defence will have their hands full in trying to stop quarterback Matt Ryan and his explosive receiving corps of Julio Jones and Roddy White.
Speaking about facing the Falcons, Spagnuolo said:
“We have to find a way to not allow the explosive plays by them. They find a way to do it against everybody. I haven’t dug deep enough into Atlanta. I’m getting a slight headache because this is one of those teams. Pick your poison. What do you take away.
We’ll figure it out. We’ll put something together and get to work.”
He will have to work it out as the Falcons will bring their A-game against a team that are their biggest division rivals.
