New Orleans Saints have not talked to QB Drew Brees over new long term deal - NFL News
The offseason for New Orleans Saints continues to go from bad to worse and fans cannot wait for the start of the new season to distract them from all of the problems affecting their franchise.
With the bounty scandal continuing to take its toll on the team’s chances ahead of the new season after the National Football League (NFL) suspended two of their best players due to their involvement in the illegal programme, another big problem has been
sidelined for now.
That problem is their star quarterback, Drew Brees’ contract situation.
If the bounty scandal had not been in the news, Brees’ contract would have been the biggest news of the offseason in the Big Easy.
The quarterback was placed on the franchise tag by the Saints before the start of the offseason to keep the player from entering free agency, however, negotiations on a new long term deal continue to remain stalled.
According to NFL.com’s insider Steve Wyche, sources close to the Saints have revealed that lately no negotiations have taken place between the franchise and Brees regarding a new deal which leaves his future at the Saints up in the air.
Brees has not signed the franchise tender and could holdout of the Saints mandatory training camp as he is without a contract.
The bounty scandal has till now kept the stalled negotiations on Brees’ contract out of the news but the issue can become another big problem for the Saints ahead of the new 2012-13 season.
Brees is the face of the franchise and easily their best player on the field.
The quarterback’s arrival at the Saints led to a huge transformation in the team’s fate as they cemented their place as one of the elite teams in the NFL.
Brees also delivered to New Orleans their one and only Super Bowl championship in history.
It is likely that the quarterback will play on a one-year tender if both parties cannot agree on a deal but his future at the franchise will remain uncertain and the quarterback could move on to another team.
That will not make the fans too happy and the Saints should pick up pace in agreeing a new deal with the quarterback to keep him in New Orleans for many more seasons to come.
