New Orleans Saints head coach Joe Vitt defends quarterback Drew Brees – NFL News
New Orleans Saints interim head coach Joe Vitt has defended his quarterback Drew Brees after a 23-13 loss to Atlanta Falcons.
Vitt took all responsibility for the loss. According to him, he did not do a better job of coaching.
Addressing a press conference on Friday, he said of Brees:
"When you have a great quarterback on your team, great quarterbacks can't have a conscience. They're going to stick tight throws. They're going to make great plays. And those great plays that great quarterbacks make take great courage. And that's just the
truth. When you're on a little bit of a dry spell and maybe you wish you had a throw back or two, potentially bad things happen."
Brees did not score any touchdown in the game against Falcons and ended his National Football League record 54-game streak of consecutive games with a touchdown pass
He was intercepted five times, most interceptions/game in his career. It was completely a bad day for him.
Vitt praised Brees, saying that the player plays to win games, as he has been doing from six years.
Brees was signed by Saints in 2006 for a six-year contract. The 2011 season was one of the best for him.
He set many records last season including highest completion percentage (71.2), most completion in season (468), and most passing yards per game, season (342.25 yards/game).
Brees has not been able to carry his form into this season and has been struggling right from the start. He has completed a total of 304 of 492 passes for 3,674 yards and scored 31 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. His quarterback rating is 64.3.
Saints safety Roman Harper also defended Brees and said:
“We just can't put it all on Drew and say, 'Hey, if Drew has a bad game, we don't win the game.' Sometimes we've got to bail him out because he's bailed us out plenty of times."
Saints have won five and lost seven games. They are ranked 3rd in National Football Conference (NFC) South.
They are going to play Week 14 game against NFC East leaders New York Giants.
