New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson says deal with QB Drew Brees is "close" - NFL News
The New Orleans Saints are having one of the worst offseason in history as they continue to reel from the impact of the bounty scandal while negotiations with start quarterback, Drew Brees seem to be going nowhere.
The Saints are still yet to provide their Super Bowl winning quarterback with a long term deal even months after the start of free agency.
Brees is currently franchise tagged but has not signed the tender as he continues to wait for a deal that will meet his valuations.
Owner, Tom Benson though has shed some light on Brees’ contract.
Speaking to the media on Friday in a press conference that announced his purchase of National Basketball Association (NBA) team New Orleans Hornets, Benson said.
"I talked to Drew Brees this morning. ... He is due in next week. We're close."
That is good news for the fans who have waited with baited breath to hear some news of progress on Brees’ contract.
The quarterback is the face of the franchise and its most celebrated player.
His arrival in 2006 turned around the fortunes of a franchise that was one of the poorest in the league and lifted a city that was lacking morale after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
Brees has remained exceptional for the franchise since arriving from the San Diego Chargers and has delivered the Saints their one and only Super Bowl Championship in history after a momentous 31-17 victory over Indianapolis Colts in the 2009 showpiece event.
In 2011, Brees was again massive as he broke multiple National Football League (NFL) records to help the Saints end the season with a 13-3 record and qualify for the playoffs as the third seed.
The quarterback broke Miami Dolphins legendary quarterback, Dan Marino’s single season passing yards record last year as he passed for a massive 5,476 yards.
New Orleans cannot afford to lose Brees and hopefully owner, Tom Benson can successfully negotiate a contract with the quarterback that will both keep him happy and at the franchise he loves for many more years to come.
The Saints bounty scandal has created enough problems for the franchise and they cannot afford another big issue.
