New Orleans Saints promote Tony Oden and Mike Mallory, hire John Bonamego – NFL update
The New Orleans Saints have made three changes in their coaching line-up. Tony Oden has been promoted from assistant secondary coach while Mike Mallory to assistant secondary coach from assistant special teams coach. John Bonamego has been brought on as
the new assistant special teams coach for the Saints.
Oden had been the assistant secondary coach for the Saints from 2006 until now. He replaces Dennis Allen, who took up the post of defensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos.
Mallory has been coaching in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) since 1986, and the National Football League (NFL) since 2008. He never went to the NFL as a player but was a linebacker for the University of Michigan Wolverines from 1982
to 1985. He was the Wolverines’ Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 1984 and was also a finalist in 1985 for the Butkus Award, which is “Given to the top linebackers at the high, collegiate and professional levels of football.”
Since 1986, Mallory has coached at Indiana University Bloomington as a graduate assistant, Kent State University as defensive line and linebacker coach, Eastern Illinois University as linebackers coach, the University of Rhode Island as defensive coordinator
and linebackers coach, Northern Illinois University as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, the University of Maryland as inside linebackers coach, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as defensive backs coach and defensive coordinator, the
University of Kansas as linebackers coach, the University of Louisville as defensive backs coach and, finally, the New Orleans Saints from 2008 until 14 March, 2011 as assistant special teams coach.
This is the second time that Bonamego will be with the Saints. Before going to the Miami Dolphins for two seasons as a special team’s coordinator, he had been with the Saints in 2006 and 2007 at the same position. Bonamego has been coaching since 1988, with
his first job in the NCAA as an assistant with the University of Maine, his second as an assistant at Lehigh University and then an assistant with the United States Military Academy. After that, he joined the NFL and was assistant specials teams coordinator
and then promoted to special teams coordinator with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He then kept the same position with the Green Bay Packers from 2003 to 2005 before going to the Saints for the first time.
