New Orleans Saints running back
Reggie Bush could return to action Sunday
Reggie Bush may be returning to action for the New Orleans Saints on Sunday in a home game against the Seattle Seahawks. The running back broke his right fibula in Week 2 in a 25-22 win against the San
Francisco 49ers.
Bush will be on Sunday’s roster if he can get through the next couple of practices without aggravating the injury.
The Saints currently have the NFL’s 25th ranked rushing offence. Bush, who has 18 yards on seven carries so far this season, is the a key player on the Saints offence, and his return should
provide a significant improvement to their running game.
The Saints are also without running back Pierre Thomas, who has been missing since Week 3 with a sprained ankle. He is not expected to return for a few weeks yet, making the return of Bush all the more
important.
Rookie running back, Chris Ivory, has done an admirable job in Bush’s absence, gaining 382 yards on 78 carries, but he cannot replace the dynamic offence Bush brings to the team. In five years in the NFL,
Bush has gained 1958 rushing yards and has 17 rushing touchdowns. He’s also gained 1997 receiving yards and has 12 receiving touchdowns.
Bush is also a constant threat in the return game. In 2008 he returned three punts for touchdowns and already has a 43-yard return this season. In his career he has a return average of 8.1 yards in 84
returns. Adding that kind of threat to their special teams not only boosts the confidence of the team, but it can put the other side’s coverage teams on edge.
The Saints are 4-3 without Bush, and trail the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC South. If they want to compete for the Division or a Wild Card spot, they’ll need Bush to be healthy.
