New Orleans Saints safety Roman Harper thinks former DC Gregg Williams was a great coach
Former defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams, was the brains and leader behind the New Orleans Saints bounty programme.
Williams joined the New Orleans Saints in 2009 and for three years ran the bounty programme paying players to make hard hits on opponents to knock them out of the game.
When the National Football League (NFL) revealed that the Saints were running the illegal programme, Williams was the first one commissioner, Roger Goodell, suspended with the defensive coordinator being banned from coaching in the league for an indefinite
period.
His role in the scheme was left in no doubt when an audio tape emerged in the media which showed the former Saints coordinator asking his players to go out and injure San Francisco 49ers players just a few hours before the Saints would take on the 49ers
in the divisional playoff game last year.
Even with such irrefutable evidence against the coach, one Saints player would not stop at defending his former coordinator.
New Orleans Saints safety, Roman Harper still remains a big fan of Williams and in an interview with WWLTV on Wednesday he said that Williams was a great coach and motivator.
“I will always remember Gregg and being a great motivator, a great coach, one of my good friends,”
Adding further he said.
“The things that he brought to this city and this team was a great attitude, he helped us win a championship and that will never be forgotten. When all this cloud and this dust clears, Gregg will always be remembered as one of the guys that helped us win
a championship.”
Williams coaching days are as good as over after Goodell brought out suspensions and it is unlikely that the former coordinator will coach another team in the near future.
In addition to Williams, Goodell also suspended Saints head coach, Sean Payton for a year while general manager, Mickey Loomis was suspended for eight-games and assistant coach and current interim head coach, Joe Vitt will miss the first six games of the
season.
Harper went on to say about Williams.
“He wants you to fly around and hit guys and play football the way it’s meant to be played. I won’t apologize for that and he shouldn’t either.”
That sentiment though does not sit well with the league as they look to end the hard hits that Williams tried to install at the Saints through the bounty system.
