New Orleans Saints season Review: Record breaking season marred by revelation of Dark side –NFL Special Part II
Continued from Part I
Against Chicago
With an opening day loss to the Green Bay Packers, New Orleans looked to get their first win of the season with a visit of Chicago Bears to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
The Bears took an early first period lead through Bears quarterback Jay Cutler’s 8-yard pass to Dane Sanzenbacher.
However, the Saints defence then completely contained Cutler who could not create any more big plays after being repeatedly sacked.
Brees took control when New Orleans were on the offence and in another impressive performance passed for three touchdowns including a 79-yard pass to Devery Henderson to score the go-ahead points.
Chicago was limited to just two field goals and lost the game 30-13 after being completely outclassed by the Saints.
Against Houston
Houston Texans were up next in week 3 for the Saints and once again Drew Brees rescued the franchise with a brilliant performance in the final quarter.
The Texans went all out in the game as they matched the Saints for points and took a two-point lead at the end of the third quarter.
They went up by 26-17 early in the final quarter as quarterback Matt Schaub connected with a 26-yard pass to James Casey.
Brees however, charged the Saints forward and at 9:30 the quarterback connected on a 27-yard pass to Jimmy Graham to peg back the Texans lead to two points.
Two minutes later Brees sent another touchdown pass this time to Lance Moore as the Saints went up by 32-26.
Houston regained the lead by a single point as Matt Schaub sent his third and final touchdown pass of the game.
With just a few minutes left in the fourth quarter Brees drove New Orleans forward and wide receiver Mark Ingram finished the 93-yard drive with a brilliant rushing 13-yard rushing touchdown to score the winning points.
At Jacksonville
New Orleans had won two games in a row and were in line to win a third straight as they faced one of the worst teams of the league in the Jacksonville Jaguars.
It was a clear mismatch as the Saints faced little trouble in dispatching the helpless Jaguars.
Drew Brees though had a relatively quieter game unlike his last two as he passed for just a single touchdown in the second quarter to Jimmy Graham.
However, even a poor Brees performance was enough to help the Saints run out victorious over the Jaguars.
The Jags scored just a single touchdown and a field goal both in the second quarter and were shutout in the entire second half of the game as New Orleans defence gave no quarter.
Three field goals by Saints kicker John Kasay secured a simple 23-10 win for the Saints to send the team to a third straight win.
Brees, though was disappointed that the Saints did not score more.
Talking after the game he said.
"Unfortunately, it was 23 points because we got inside the 20 three times in the second half and didn't come away with touchdowns.
"So that's disappointing, but feel we have proven that we can move the ball. Now we just got to score touchdowns."
