New Orleans Saints season Review: Record breaking season marred by revelation of Dark side –NFL Special Part V
Continued from Part IV
Against New York
With two straight wins in a row the Saints were once again on a roll and faced the then struggling New York Giants in week 12.
The Saints who returned to action after a long bye-week completely outplayed the visitors as Brees put in another wonderful performance.
New Orleans were in total control right from the start as they took advantage of a tired looking Giants side.
Brees passed for a total of 363-yards and sent four touchdowns to secure a comfortable win for his team taking their winning run to three games.
Giants quarterback Eli Manning tried his best to keep up but could not manage it as he was stopped repeatedly by a gritty Saints defence.
The quarterback could only muster two touchdowns and threw an interception in the lopsided loss.
The Saints won by a comfortable 49-24 margin and had become one of the favourites to reach the Super Bowl.
Against Detroit
Next up were the Detroit Lions and the Saints once again made short work of their opponents with impressive ease.
The Lions were completely outplayed in the first half as the Saints built up a 24-7 lead in the first half of the game.
However, Detroit tried to fight back pegging back the Saints lead to just a single scoring play in the third period.
They were shutout in the fourth quarter and Brees sent his final touchdown pass to Darren Sproles from six-yards out to put the game beyond all doubt.
Drew Brees passed for a total of 342-yards and sent three touchdown passes in the game.
The Saints won 31-17 for a fourth straight win.
"We've got a lot of work to do still ... but I like the fact that we're playing with confidence," Saints coach Sean Payton said. "I like the fact that we answered in the second half when the momentum shifted."
At Tennessee
For most of the game the Titans kept New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees silent.
For the first three quarters New Orleans had to depend on John Kasay’s field goals to keep pace with the Titans.
The game entered the final period with the score locked at 10-9 and New Orleans looked to their quarterback for salvation.
The veteran delivered.
Brees sent two quick fire touchdown passes early in the fourth quarter both to give the Saints a 22-10 lead.
The quarterback sent a brilliant 35-yard pass to receiver Marques Colston at 12:39 to score the go-ahead points.
A few minutes later he connected once again with Colston this time from 28-yards to build a 12 point lead.
The Titans struck back with five minutes left in the game to make things interesting as they pegged back the lead to just one scoring play.
However, New Orleans held on and won the game securing a playoff berth.
The Saints had won their fifth straight game and were now looking to secure the NFC South division title.
"It was a gut-check win for us," New Orleans coach Sean Payton said. "A lot of things early on didn't go our way. We had some calls that could have went either way. We just kept fighting and won a good game on the road against a good team."
