New Orleans Saints season Review: Record breaking season marred by revelation of Dark side –NFL Special Part VI
Continued from Part V
At Minnesota
New Orleans made short work of the poor Minnesota Vikings in their week 15 encounter as Drew Brees once again passed for five touchdowns to lead the Saints to an easy victory.
Brees was majestic as he continued to drive closer to beating Dan Marino’s record, as he passed for 412-yards and completed 32 out of 40 attempted passes for an almost perfect match rating of 149.2.
The Saints took the lead in the first period and never looked back as Brees decimated a poor Vikings defence to help the team win 42-20.
Against Atlanta
The Saints needed to win this game to secure the National Football Conference (NFC) South division title and they did just that with a thumping victory over their fierce rivals.
New Orleans offence completely overpowered the Falcons as Brees passed for 307-yards to overtake Dan Marino’s three decade old passing yards record.
The quarterback also sent four touchdown passes to lead the Saints to a comfortable 45-16 victory.
Saints coach Sean Payton was proud of his quarterback’s achievement and said after the game.
"Obviously, it's a special moment for the players, especially Drew. I couldn't be more proud of him."
Against Carolina
With a wild card spot and division title wrapped up, the final game of the season held no value for New Orleans.
However, they still played as though fighting for a playoff spot and Drew Brees decimated the Panthers with a brilliant individual effort.
The quarterback once again passed for five touchdowns to destroy the Panthers as New Orleans ran out 45-17 winners.
The Saints were on their way to the playoffs and looked unstoppable.
Against Detroit (Playoff Wildcard round)
New Orleans Saints faced playoff newcomers Detroit Lions in the wildcard round.
Drew Brees continued his brilliant form passing for three touchdowns and a total of 466-yards to completely outplay the Lions.
Detroit could not keep up with the Saints offence and succumbed to a big 45-28 loss.
At San Francisco (Playoff Divisional round)
No NFL fan could have missed such a big encounter.
It is sufficient to say that both teams played brilliantly as the 49ers trailing by three points found a way to score a brilliant touchdown to win the game in the dying seconds of the fourth quarter.
49ers quarterback Alex Smith sent a 14-yard pass to tight-end Vernon Davis who made no mistake with a brilliant catch to win the game and send the 49ers to the NFC Championship game.
