New Orleans Saints win for the first time beating San Diego Chargers 31-24
The script for this game it seemed was written in the stars as the New Orleans Saints defeated the San Diego Chargers 31-24 for their first win of the 2012/13 season.
A lot of things were at stake in this game and the entire events of the game fell right in favour of the New Orleans Saints.
Quarterback Drew Brees finally broke Hall of Fame quarterback Johnny Unitas’ 50-year old NFL record by throwing a touchdown pass for the 48th game straight while the Saints got their first win of the season while being watched from the stands
by suspended head coach, Sean Payton, general manager, Mickey Loomis and assistant head coach, Joe Vitt who were given special permission by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to attend the game.
Brees himself had wrote an email to Goodell requesting their presence which was granted by the commissioner and it seemed that the entire Saints organisation were given a boost as they won a memorable game.
The quarterback said after the game:
"I guess you really couldn't have written a better script for tonight. To break the record, to get the win, and the fashion in which we won -- really a complete team effort all the way around.”
Adding further he said:
"It gave us a good mojo for sure. I love my coach, so glad he could be here. Mickey and Joe Vitt as well. It is special for our team, special they could be a part of this record."
For long periods though it seemed that the San Diego Chargers would successfully ruin the Saints big day.
Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers passed for 354 yards and threw two touchdowns to lead the Chargers to a big 24-14 lead early in the third quarter.
However, Drew Brees and the Saints seemed in no mood to succumb to another defeat.
Brees passed for two second half touchdowns one in each of the final two quarters to lead New Orleans to an important victory which will raise spirits after what has been a trying season for the franchise.
Rivers said after the game:
"I can't tell you how tough it is to lose a game like this. We were right there. We were up by 10 points and just didn't get it done. We have a great team, a championship caliber team. But we have to win close games like this."
It was a huge win for the Saints who are now 1-4 and will give them big confidence in the games ahead.
