G'Day Yankies:)

Just wondering how the recovery is going, since our news groups only seem to be interested in scaring us with the latest "rampant killer koala" type c**p they never follow up on the real stories.

So can anyone let me in on whats happening there now?

  1. i think it will take 20 yrs to get everything back together ?

  2. The government is handling it. So the project will never be finished. They are just flushing tax dollars down the toilet.

  3. There has been enormous progress in the past 3 years but New Orleans and the rest of the Katrina-devastated area has a long way to go. For example, most of the coast in Mississippi for a half-mile from the beach still looks like Hiroshima after the atomic bomb was dropped on it.

It is very hard to realize the scale of the disaster that was Katrina: An area of 90,000 square miles was wrecked by the storm and that is larger than all of Great Britain. Katrina also destroyed 225,000 buildings in LA & MS. To compare, the California fires of 2007 affected an area of 700 square miles and 1000 buildings were destroyed.

In my opinion, it will take until about 2015 for the Gulf coast to fully recover from Katrina.

However, the areas that tourists visit in New Orleans have been repaired and you have to look closely to see that Katrina happened at all. It's not a coincidnece - the older areas of NOLA were buit on high ground and didn't flood. Wind damage is much easier, cheaper, and faster to repair than flood damage.

You should visit and see for yourself!
