Why did tonight's BBC 6 O'clock News lead with the evacuated New Orleans/Gustav story and not the third body that has been found in the Shropshire mansion fire?

Well New orleans hasnt been hit by the storm yet so it will be the Mansion Fire for now

Right now, South Wales is like New Orleans, but without the winds..lol

How news broadcasts are arranged are dicated by a set of news values- the characteristics of a news story, such a negative over positive news, ambiguity, cultural proximity and significance etc etc. New Orleans is of significance to more people and is also tied in with the running story which is given a lot of significance in news lately to the presidential race and Bush cancelling his speech their and McCain's comparison to how he is dealing with it and how Bush did the first time around.

While both stories are on-going, N.O is constantly being updated with new information, new pictures, interviews, videos and as obvious as it sounds, news needs to be NEW. the mansion story, is as yet very ambiguous- one body has been identified and while we all know the other two bodies are the father and daughter, news channels cannot say this yet as fact and so they have nothing else to give an audience.

The New Orleans story is about an impending hurricane that could destroy the homes of thousands of people.

The mansion fire is about the disappearance of three people, one of whom would appear to have been a rather dishonest individual.

Which has more impact on the world?

I don't know. I suppose they normally start with what they think is the biggest story at the time. Also, they may have been hoping that the third body would soon be identified, so when they ran that story they'd have more details
