Question:

New Pomeranian help me out?

I just got a 10 week old Pomeranian female. She is such a good puppy! I just had a few questions. How many times a week should I brush her teeth (and with which toothpaste)? How many times a week should I bathe her? And, do I HAVE to give her heart worm pills about once a month? I don't mind it, I'm just wondering if it's absolutely needed. Thanks!

  1. It's good to brush your pom's teeth once a week, even every day would be great if you have the time.

Bathe your pom once a week, too many times can dry out its skin

Yes, it's a good idea to give her the pills once a month!

  2. About the toothbrush thing, you should brush her teeth every day to maintain almost perfect dental health. I suggest this toothbrush and toothpaste combo.

My puppy uses it and it really keeps the tartar at bay. Some toothpastes for dogs are chicken flavor, therefore dogs like them more, but in this pack it is mint and I prefer that because I find the chicken makes their breath horrible.

I give my puppy a bath 2x a week, but that is not average, I just love my puppy to be clean and smell good. I use baby shampoo if he has already had a bath throughout the week, because it is gentle on his skin. But if it is his first I use this strong smelling-deep cleaning dog shampoo.

I would stick to heart-worm pills to stay on the safe side, you really would be sad if she got heart-worms.

  3. You can brush her teeth every day just to get her used to having it done.  I use CET toothpaste on my dogs - the poultry flavor - they seem to enjoy  it.  As for the bathing..you really don't need to bathe her every week unless she gets dirty. The heartworm pills are important..I have worked in the Vet field for alot of years now and have seen cases of heartworm that could of prevented..even have seen "indoor only" dogs test positive..It is just not worth the risk when it can be prevented so easily.

  4. Congratulations!

Its not required that you brush her teeth weekly, you can substitute a weekly tooth brushing by a dental toy (nylabone makes dental treats and chews). Make sure you don't brush the dogs teeth with "human" toothpaste, but with toothpaste meant for dogs. You can find it at most pet stores (petsmart, petco, world of pets, etc). Talk to your vet about how often he/she thinks your dog needs its teeth brushed.

As for heart worm pills, YES. Its ABSOLUTELY required that you give your dog its heart worm pills once a month. Heart worms are DEADLY for dogs. And make sure its not "about" once a month, it HAS to be once a month, on the SAME day every month.

  5. You should bathe him or her at least one time a week, more they are outside a lot.  Teeth should be brush about 2 times per week.
