New Qualification criteria for 2012 European Ryder Cup Team
On 25th September 2012, the best golfers in the world and a huge number of spectators are going to gather at the Medinah Country Club, Chicago, Illinois for the 2012 Ryder Cup. This is the site where major Championships have been played for the past 60 years.
The event is going to end on the 30th September.
The two teams, America and Europe are going head to head for the biggest golfing event of the year to fight for no prize money, just the glory. This is going to be the 39th Ryder Cup this year.
The American Captain for this year’s Ryder Cup team is Davis Love and the Captain of the European team of this year’s Ryder Cup is José Maria Olazábal.
This year, there is a bit of a change in the selection of the European team with the consultation of the European Captain Olazábal. The European Tour Tournament Committee is pleased to announce the new rules of the selection for Ryder Cup team.
The points start counting from the Omega European Masters at Crans-Sur-Sierre and the points for the Ryder Cup stop at the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.
From this year, the top five players of the list of top points in Europe and the top five players of the list of top points in the World would be automatically selected.
This will be a mixture of the two lists and the European lists will be given more preference than the World list. In the end, two players will be selected by the captain to complete the twelve men squad for the Ryder Cup against the American Team.
In an interview, the European captain for the Ryder Cup, Olazábal said, “I am very pleased that the Tournament Committee has agreed to my request. The only reason that I asked for a change in the criteria is because I believe that it will give me the strongest
team possible to defend The Ryder Cup”.
“I looked over the last few qualification processes, going back to 2004, and was satisfied that my proposal would give me the strongest team on paper. We are going to have a very strong team but I just felt that this would give the team the best chance to
keep The Ryder Cup and that is what we all want,” he added.
Olazábal is sure that he would have a strong team and will be able to defeat the American team.
