New Reality TV Show: Terrell Owens Joins the Cincinnati Bengals
Get your popcorn ready Cincinnati, Terrell Owens (T.O) is now a Bengal. We've been waiting for it all spring, nearly all summer even, and it’s finally happened. Owens has now signed with a team and it’s the one that everyone can undeniably say they wanted to see him on.
Owens has signed a one-year contract worth $2 million with the Cincinnati Bengals, with $2 million more in incentives. It is a pay cut from last year, when the Buffalo Bills paid him $6.5 million, but Owens had been saying he’d be willing to take a pay cut.
The outspoken, controversial receiver had been saying that the media was responsible for his tarnished reputation and the Bengals are willing to let him prove it.
The biggest story that stems from this is that Owens joins his buddy in Cincinnati, another outspoken, entertaining Chad Ochocinco. The two are both stars of their own reality show and have unquestioned charisma. Combined, they will surely bring the Bengals a newfound swagger.
Ochocinco, if you’ll remember, was the first to implore his team about signing Owens in March. After meeting with the receiver, the Bengals went on to offer Antonio Bryant a contract, as Owens was left without a team.
Much that had to do with the sudden interest in Owens had to do with quarterback Carson Palmer. Palmer had been working out with Owens in California and practicing football and he liked what he saw. Head coach Marvin Lewis recently commented on the quarterback’s thoughts: Carson was really impressed with a lot of the things that Terrell was doing."
Lewis also chimed in with his own thoughts on Owens: "He's an effective player and you like what he brings." "You like what people say about him who have had him on their football team to the positive, and we've just got to make sure none of the negative creeps in anymore. He's been a couple of years beyond that."
Of course, the most enthusiastic response of Owens joining the team was from his good buddy Ochocinco. On his twitter account, the receiver posted: "Terrell Owens is officially a Cincinnati Bengal, Cincy let's welcome him with open arms, it's on now!"
Owens simply posted on his twitter account that he was hoping to be a Bengal very soon.
Owens has signed just in time for training camp, which will give him more time to get better acquainted with his new quarterback and prove that he is not the ‘cancer’ that he was made out to be by the media.
Although Owens had a pedestrian season last year in Buffalo, he also didn’t have a bona fide starting quarterback, as he had Trent Edwards and Ryan Fitzpatrick, as well as a rotating coaching staff. He now has an established quarterback in Carson Palmer, who will have to pick up his own game.
The Bengals are in a tough spot as they are the reigning winners of the AFC North division. They are the hunted, and gunning for them are the Baltimore Ravens, who made huge offseason improvements and are Super Bowl favourites. The Steelers, despite missing "Big Ben" Roethlisberger early in the season, are no slouches themselves. Now the Bengals bring some experience and a physical receiver to their line-up with Owens.
If Owens can grab the attention of defences in the division, then that could leave room for other teammates to make plays. Cincinnati seems like the perfect fit for Owens at this stage in his career.
Many now wonder if adding Owens will propel the Bengals to Super Bowl contention and how much of a difference the 36 year-old can make. All we know for sure is that it’ll be exciting to watch Ochocinco and T.O in Cincinnati!
