Eiichiro Sasaki, the game’s director, explains why Leon Kennedy’s campaign will excite fans of the classic Resident Evil feel and also why he “really stands out”.
After taking a look at Albert Wesker’s son, Jake Muller, and Chris Redfield’s campaigns in the previous parts of this article, it is time now to find out what Mr. Sasaki had to say about Leon Kennedy, the star of Resident Evil 4.
While Muller’s gameplay will be unique and Chris Redfield will be more action heavy, similar to Resident Evil 5’s gameplay, Mr. Sasaki revealed that Leon’s campaign and gameplay will be a shout out to the classic Resident Evil series, or to be more specific his gameplay will be more survival-horror than the rest.
Sasaki explained, “We’re really trying to recreate the horrific atmosphere fans remember from the first Resident Evils and going for more gothic horror feel for Leon’s part of the story.”
He also pointed out that this time they would be relying less on cut-scenes to add dramatic elements, “But usually we left every big story moment to the big cut-scenes. This time we wanted to bring that home to the player and make that more immediate. We tried to add those elements to the game itself and bring the player closer to the dramatic elements.”
One can assume a more Uncharted like feel to the game then, with cut scenes seamlessly merging into gameplay or vice versa.
As for Leon’s plot, well it turns out he is back to his old ways of falling for ladies who lead him into trouble at nearly every turn. Leon assassinates the president of the United States, though not before the president turns into a walking corpse and teams up with Helena Harper, who claims to have info of the bio-terror attack.
All of this happens in at Tall Oaks University’s campus and after the events that take place here, Mr. Sasaki reveals that he heads off to China.
As for Leon’s character, well Sasaki seems to have a soft spot for him, “As a character Leon really stands out for me. He has a compassion in him that you don’t always find....he often finds himself in bad situations because of the women in his life.”
