What's the purpose? Do you need it if you use Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird?

i have vista ...using firefox .... its a good idea to keep the updates happening ... play it safe ..... just update ...

You could be talking about two things.

1. Firefox 3 - Firefox 3 is a great update to Firefox, You should really consider getting it.

2. Windows XP Service Pack 3 - This update basically expands upon the updates from SP2 along with all of the updates since then, all inside a shiny 150 MB package.

If you're talking about Windows XP SP3, then no, you don't need it for Firefox or Thunderbird. The main point of SP3 is to include all security fixes since SP2 in a nice bundle. There are a few other minor tweaks and changes but for the most part no one will really use them or notice.
