New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory win games in Australian Hockey League
The Men’s hockey teams of New South Wales (NSW) and Australian Capital Territory (ACT) made outstanding start and won the matches respectively against South Australia (SA) and Northern Territory (NT) in the Round-6 of the Australian Hockey League (AHL) being
held at the Sydney Olympic Park on August 6, 2011.
In the first match of the day, the NSW team was flying and opened the game quite brilliantly. Though it was a single-handed game and mostly action belonged to NSW, the South Australian players displayed outstanding defence in the first half of play. The
players from the South Australia dominated the field from the very early minutes of the match and continued their strength in the first thirty five minutes of the game. The NSW Waratahs came into action in the second set of play, notched four goals while holding
opponent at bay and concluded the match into their favour.
After exchanging few strikes, Scott Hughes drove the ball at the defensive circle of NSW and slammed a reverse shot at the backboard to open the score for Southern Australia. It was the only successful action in the first half of play and they led the game
at the half-time 1-0.
In the second half of play, the NSW strikers came into action and destroyed the defensive line of SA. Tristan White scored first goal for NSW in the 50th minute while his team-mate Duncan Pearce converted a short corner in the 52nd
minute of the game and took a two-goal lead. In the later time, Matthew Butturini and Pearce added one goal each and sealed the 4-1 victory.
Interestingly, the second match of the day between Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and Northern Territory (NT) was concluded at four-all draw. It was an outstanding show where both squads rendered competitive performances to increase their chances.
Both NT and ACT accomplished back-to-back attacks against each other which not only increased the suspense of the game but enthral the audience tremendously.
NT opened up the action from the very beginning and Travis Carroll scored first goal of the game in the very first minute. In a counter-attack, Josh Hawes levelled the game while his team-mate Wouter Hermkens converted a short corner to establish their first
lead of the game. Jarrod Lockley and Adrian Lockley scored one goal apiece respectively in the 24th and 32nd minutes of the game to change the lead into their favour.
In the second half, Wouter Hermkens of ACT scored a couple of goals and put his team ahead at the scoreboard. However, Dylan Hill marked a goal in the 61st minute of the match and managed to draw the game at four-all.
