New South Wales Waratahs thrash Darwin Airport Resort Territory by 9-1 in Australian Hockey League
Duncan Pearce scored a hat-trick, as New South Wales (NSW) Waratahs registered a commanding 9-1 win over Darwin Airport Resort Territory (NT Stingers) in the final game of the Round V of the Australian Hockey League (AHL). The single-handed match was
contested at the Tasmanian Hockey Centre in Australia, on June 29, 2011.
Waratahs is currently holding the 4th place on the point-chart which won two games and lost three in the last five appearances. Despite the lowest position, it has scored 21 goals while conceded only 19.
On the other hand, the team of Darwin is sitting at the 7th place with one victory, three defeats and one draw. Its goal record is quite unimpressive, as it scored only 7 goals while conceded 19 in the last five matches.
Airport Resort Territory landed on the field just to concede goals. It was the match, where only one team accomplished back-to-back goals and established their strength on the field.
Duncan Pearce, the legendary striker of Waratahs, was at his best and lit the lamp in the 4th minute of the match. He managed to take the ball inside the 25-yard line and slammed a flicking shot into the goal. However, the maiden
goal increased the speed of the game and his team-mate, Matthew Butturini, doubled the tally in the very next minute. He got the ball at the top of the circle and dribbled a couple of defenders to send it into the goal. The opening goals encouraged the Waratahs’
players who started more speedy game.
With nine minutes into the first half of play, Mark Patterson converted a short-corner and expanded the Waratahs’ lead up to three goals. In a matter of two minutes, Joshua Milelr scored another goal from the field while his team-mate, Butturini, converted
a short-corner in the 15th minute of the match. With a couple of goals, the lead expanded up to five goals.
Darwin was playing defensive, but failed to block the consecutive attacks from opponent's side. Pearce notched another couple of goals in the 22nd and 28thminute of the game and took an insuperable seven-goal lead.
Airport Resort Territory strike came alive in the waning moments of the first half but could only score a single goal. Dylan Hill accounted for a solitary goal and closed out the opening period at 7-1.
The second half of the play was slow, as only two goals were scored from Waratahs’ side. Thomas Lobsey and Matthew Williss scored one goal each in the 51st and 70th minute to seal the victory by 9-1.
