New South Wales trounce ACT by 6-4 in U-21 Men’s Australian Hockey Championship
New South Wales (NSW) powered a 6-4 win over ACT on the day-two game of the U-21 Men’s Australian Hockey Championship that took place on July 6, 2011 at the Perth Hockey Stadium in Australia.
The two teams were standing on the edge at the closure of day one as they wanted to grab this crucial win. In the opening match, NSW beat Northern Territory by 7-2, while ACT lost to South Australia by 1-4.
Though the NSW side was stronger in attack, the ACT team also marked three more goals in the last ten minutes of the match.
ACT and NSW commenced the game in a dazzling way and started attacking each other from the very start of the first half. The NSW players took the ball under their control and accomplished back-to-back attacks against ACT. They earned a quick short-corner
in the 2nd minute which was converted into a goal by Matt Willis. It was the first goal that boosted the spirit of other NSW players. Soon after the ACT striker, Lewis Shepherd, made an effort and scored a goal from the field in the 6th minute
to tie the knots at one-all.
The tie-up score continued in the next few minutes and once again NSW succeeded to get a leading goal. It was again Willis who scored another goal off a short-corner in the 15th minute of the match and put NSW ahead to enhance the lead up to three
goals.
In a matter of six minutes, Ross Bougoukas took the ball away and scooped a beautiful shot at the ACT’s goal-post. The ACT’s goalie never had a chance to stop the ball. In the 26th minute of the match, Jordon Willot scored his first goal of the
day to close out the first half with NSW leading the game at 4-1.
Bougoukas and Willot were in action once again and doubled their personal tally with one goal each in the 44th and 56th minutes of the match, respectively.
Though the strikers from ACT came alive in the dying moments, but could only score three goals. Jack Wallace scored a goal in the 58th minute while James Jewell added two more in the 60th and 62nd minutes. Despite a valiant
effort by the ACT in the last ten minutes they lost the match by 4-6.
