New South Wales whitewash OAMPS Queensland in Australian Hockey League: 4-0
The Men’s hockey team of New South Wales (NSW) has whitewashed OAMPS Queensland 4-0 in the crucial classification match at the Sydney Olympic Park and confirmed a berth in finals of the Australian Hockey League (AHL).
Though both the squads came onto the field in quite an offensive way, it was NSW that established their dominance from the very early minutes and held back throughout the two halves. It is vital to note here that NSW required a victory to move forward in
the title-claiming fight of the league. At the same time, it was a great chance for New South Wales to take revenge from Queensland to whom they lost the final game of the 2010 edition of the Australian Hockey League.
The match unfolded at very fast pace with both the squads searching for a go-ahead goal. After exchanging a few aggressive attacks, it was the home team of NSW that drew first blood in the 13th minute of the match. Josh Miller drove the ball at
the top of the circle and unleashed a brilliant shot in the backboard.
With the passage of time, the team of Queensland started efforts to make a comeback into the match. Matthew Swann was making solo runs in hunt for an equaliser. The fast paced action between the two talented squads continued to enthrall the spectators. It
seemed that the two squads entered the game with a mission to destroy each other.
In the 30th minute of the mark, Thomas Lobsey of New South Wales notched the ball at the midfield position and made a tremendous run towards the downfield. From the right flank of the goal, Lobsey slammed a powerful shot that moved absolutely
into the cross bars. The first half action completed with Queensland trailing by a couple of goals.
Contrary to the expectations, the ball remained at the midfield in the opening minutes of the second half. Neither NSW nor South Wales was willing to give space to the opposite side on any front. Despite having in mind that they have to take the game by
a couple of goals or more, the team of Queensland replaced the custodian with an outfield player.
First shocking attack came into the action when Matthew Butturini drove the ball inside the 25-yard line and volleyed a super shot at the roof of the goal. With eight minutes remaining on the clock, Joshua White scored off a short corner through a reverse
shot and sealed the significant victory for New South Wales. They not only win the game but confirmed a place in the finals of the match.
