I just purchased an LG 50" 720 HDTV and a PS3 with Blu-Ray and now i am looking to get a surround sound system not too expensive. Do i need to get the package that comes with the DVD player if i dont need it. A list of good brands and prices would be much apreciated.

  1. I think you will be better served not getting a package deal that includes a DVD player.  Instead buy a legitimate receiver from Yamaha, Pioneer, Denon, Sony or Onkyo.  Can you give a price range?  That will determine specific recommendations.  Also how big is your room?

For speakers I would go with Polk Audio for the best bang for your buck.  They are not the best speakers in the world (who can afford that?) but they are very hard to beat for the money.  Their intro line is the Monitor series.  Above that is the RTi line, then the LSi series which is what I have. Also the Polk Forum is a great place to learn about audio once you get hooked like me :)    See here for details, but the prices are retail and you can find lower prices online.
