New West Bromwich Albion manager Roy Hodgson focuses on defence
West Bromwich Albion’s newly appointed manager, Roy Hodgson has admitted that his team will have to improve their defensive performances as they battle to avoid relegation in the 2010-11 season.
The former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Inter-c39567 Milan manager clearly stated that his team has to put up an impressive defence for the rest of the season in order to stay in the Barclays Premier League.
“But, there is no doubt, if you are a team that concedes goals, whether at the top or bottom, you are going to find it very difficult to get the points. Sooner or later you can't be reliant on scoring three goals every game to get points. That is not what
happens in the Premier League,” said Hodgson.
Moreover, Hodgson has claimed that still he is unable to comment whether his new team would be able to survive in the English top flight, as he is still new at the club.
He said, “I believe they are good enough. It would be a foolish statement to come out and say 'no problems, we are staying up' and the fans wouldn't expect that of me. They realise how difficult the task is. They've been watching the team all season.”
It was Roy Hodgson’s first game in charge of West Bromwich Albion, when the Baggies surrendered their first half 3-goal lead against West Ham United and ended up getting only one point.
The Baggies have the weakest defence in the Barclays Premier League, as they have managed only one clean sheet in the whole season.
Former West Bromwich manager Roberto Di Matteo, who was sacked after the Baggies lost to Manchester City by three goals recently, had also highlighted Baggies defensive frailties, but failed to find any solution during his reign.
West Bromwich Albion, who remained mostly in the top half of the table in first six months, have conceded 24 goals in their last 10 League matches, which took the Baggies into the relegation zone.
The Baggies will play their next match against the bottom-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers at The Hawthorns.
