New Xbox, old controller won't work!?

Recently my old Xbox's video card died (no thanks to my brother leaving it on all night), and I sent it in to get it fixed and/or get a new one if they couldn't do anything about it. They sent me a brand new console, and I quickly set it up no problem. However, when I tried to sync my controller, it wouldn't turn on. I figured the batteries were dead since I don't have a wall charger and my Play and Charge hasn't been connected to anything for two weeks, so I hooked up my Play and Charge to my controller, and it seemed to work okay... However, the red light on the Play and Charge seemed to change to green waaayyyy to quickly. I pressed my guide button, and the controller hadn't charged at all! So why was the light green? I pulled out the Play and Charge and what do you know, the controller died instantly. I put in regular batteries and everything seemed to work fine, it was synced with my Xbox perfectly, it just wasn't charging. Has anyone else had this problem? Am I going to have to buy a new Play and Charge Kit or wall charger? I'm not very happy about this :\
