  1. it should come out in fall, they're still working the tweaks

  2. The new menu system will not change the fact that you and your friends will all need to own a copy of the game in order to play online.  This isn't like the DS where some games allow you to "beam" a copy to your friend to play during that session.

The new menu system seems to be aimed at both the Wii's environment with its Mii's, and Sony's upcoming Home for the PS3.  Like the Wii, you will supposedly be able to take your little avatar (whatever Microsoft named them) into your games.  They will replace your gamerpic in some online games (like Uno) and in other games, you'll supposedly be able to use your avatar in the game.  There aren't a whole lot of details about this yet, though,  I would assume this would only apply to new games.  Microsoft has said they would only allow this in "E" games.  So, no, you won't be able to take your little 360-Mii dude into COD4 and watch his head explode when he gets shot by a rocket launcher, nor will you be able to take him into, say, DOA4 and live out your closet fantasy of being beaten into submission by its scantily clad females.  (awwww....why not?!?)

The new menu system will also reorganize some of the menus to make it easier to use, and also be used to introduce some new features for the 360.  Two features I know of will be the ability to copy a game to your hard drive, and streaming movies from Netflix.  Copying a game to the hard drive should speed up those loadtimes that we all love to hate in some games.  However you will still need to keep the original game disc in the drive to allow you to play.  The Netflix feature will allow you to stream movies through your 360, just as you can do with PC now.  Netflix has some 11,000 titles online at this time that you can view.  However, you will need both a Netflix account and a Xbox Live Gold account to use this feature.

Should be interesting to see what happens when both the 360 and PS3 release their new online/menu systems this fall.
