Question:

New York City SWAT ?

Yeah, this is a three-part question:

1) I'd just like to know if New York (City) also has a SWAT division (I heard its called 'Emergence Service units', don't know for sure),

2) If yes, is the training anything like in the L.A.P.D., or if there really is any use for a SWAT division in New York City (by that I really mean, would I serve or be in the line-of-fire often?; considerably safer than L.A. , Detroit or Rio)

3) Would it get in the way of my college education, were I to join?

Thanks, in advanced!

  1. 1) yes there is an ESU

    2) there is six months of training during which the testing is ongoing. Generally you cant gain selection w/out having at least three years minimum service. ESU is constantly on the go and the type of situations you would find yourself in varies from rapelling down a bridge to rescue someone, extricating someone from an MVA, to making an entry to a barricaded building and pretty much anything in between.

    3) depends on how it is you are structuring your college classes. I know a guy that is taking classes online and he finds it tough but he manages.

If you are looking for a dept that is 'considerably safer than L.A etc' perhaps you should find some other choice of career. putting on the uniform regardless of where you are located means you are going to be working in dangerous situations.

If however you choose to go the NYPD route, good luck! My cousin suggested you work towards ESU from early on if that is what your main aim is. He also said for you to 'cultivate' contacts from day one, ie: people you are in academy w may one day be the people that have a say in how your career progresses etc. Also if don't think that word does not get around about your reputation as to how you handle yourself and your treatment of those you work w.
